Figueroa named head coach at Lowell
December 2nd, 2010
A UMass-Lowell legend took the helm for the River Hawks as Christian Figueroa was named head coach of the men's soccer team this week. Figueroa was one of the best players in the program's history from 2003-07 and had been assistant coach for four years prior to taking on the role of interim head coach when Bryan Scales left last October to take over the vacant director of youth development position with the New England Revolution.
Figueroa's short stint as interim head coach convinced the Lowell athletic department to give him the permanent job as he led the team to a 2-1-1 record during a season where the team finished 3-11-2 overall and 2-9-2 in the NE-10.

"I am very excited for this opportunity," Figueroa said. "This is a very special place to me, and to not only become the head coach of a program with so much pride, but the same program for which I played, is truly amazing."
If anyone can lead UMass-Lowell back to glory, it is Figueroa. Prior to his collegiate career, Figueroa starred in high school in North Andover where he was Cape Ann League all-star and an All-State and All-Eastern Mass player. Figueroa's time as a River Hawks midfielder included an overall record of 47-17-14, two NCAA Tournament appearances and two NE-10 tournament titles. He was 2003 NE-10 Freshman of the Year and an all-conference and NSCAA All-Northeast Region player three times. After his playing career was over, he was invited to tryout for the New England Revolution in 2007.
