Wildcats Earn Fourth Shutout

Start Conference Play 2-0

October 5, 2007

BALTIMORE, Md. – Marianne Rivard and Michelle Sheehan each scored and Ally Yost made five saves to lead the New Hampshire women’s soccer team past the University of Maryland Baltimore County, 2-0, Thursday afternoon.

It was the second goal in as many games for Rivard, a West Kingston, R.I. native. It had been a little longer for Sheehan (Belmont, Mass.), who hadn’t netted a goal in nearly a month.

UNH's Shaunna Kaplan recorded one of the Wildcats eight shots on goal Thursday.

Yost made sure the tallies stood up for the Wildcats, stopping all five shots she faced to post her third shutout of the season and the fourth for UNH, which improved to 6-4-1 (2-0-0 America East). The blanking dropped UMBC to 1-8-2 (0-2-0).

Rivard got things started for the Wildcats in the 13th minute when she headed the ball into the net off one of the Wildcats’ seven corner kicks, this one off the foot of freshman midfielder Amy Avitable (Pembroke, Mass.). It was Rivard’s second consecutive game-winning goal.

Sheehan added some insurance in the 81st minute when she took a cross from Rivard and found the back of the net for her team-leading sixth time this season.

UMBC goalkeeper Catie Bukowski made six saves for the Retrivers. New Hampshire was firing shots in her direction all day, outshooting UMBC, 24-14.
