UNH Women Earn Conference Victory

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Caitlin Serafine scored once and assisted on another and Caitlin Whalen added two helpers to lead the New Hampshire women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Vermont Sunday.

The America East tilt improved UNH to 8-5-1 overall and 4-1-0 in the conference and left Vermont at 1-12-1 overall (0-4-0 America East).

New Hampshire took a 1-0 lead just before halftime when a Vermont was called for a pass back to the goalkeeper. After the Catamounts’ Emilie Rowe stopped the ball from going over the endline in UVM's defensive end, goalkeeper Eliza Bradley picked up the ball. The referee ruled it a pass back and awarded UNH an indirect kick from the six-yard line. After a touch from Whelan, Serafine blasted the shot into the net to give the Wildcats the lead.

In the second half, Serafine sent a long pass to Whelan from the UNH defensive end and Whelan kept the ball going forward to find Julie O'Shaughnessy. O'Shaughnessy got behind the UVM defense and chipped the ball over an overly-aggressive Bradley and into the net from 20 yards out to give UNH a 2-0 lead.

Vermont would half the lead when Jessica Becker's (Woodbridge, Conn.) shot caromed off a UNH defender and Carson Laderoute (Rutland, Vt.) put back the rebound to bring UVM within one, 2-1.

Vermont made things interesting in the closing minutes. In the 75th minute Becker sent a long strike that just sailed over the crossbar and in the 84th minute Rowe's header off a free kick went just wide of the post.

Vermont did outshoot the Wildcats, 12-8, in the match. Nikki Golding finished the day with six saves for New Hampshire, while Bradley made three stops for the Catamounts.
