Wheaton Escapes with Win
Remain Undeafeted After Two Late Goals
September 27, 2007
AMHERST, Mass. – The Wheaton women’s soccer team looked to be headed toward its first loss of the season Wednesday, down 1-0 to Amherst with 10 minutes left. But the Lyons battled back, scoring two late goals to win, 2-1, and remain unbeaten on the season at 9-0-1.
Amherst, which fell to 1-4-2, broke a game-long scoreless deadlock with 10:30 remaining in regulation. Freshman Kyla Woodhouse took a feed from junior Stephanie Yesnik and lofted the ball over Wheaton goalkeeper Kyla Woodhouse (Topsham, ME) for the 1-0 lead.
But, Wheaton came right back with a goal of its own. Freshman Barrie Lindsay rolled a soft shot that eluded Amherst goalie Lili Ferguson, knotting the game at 1-1.
Less than three minutes later, Ferguson was forced to rush out to the 18-yard line and challenge a loose ball, but Melida Alvarez just barely beat her to the punch and set up a streaking Lindsay, who pounded a shot into the back of the net for the 2-1 advantage.
The Jeffs outshot the Lyons 19-16, while earning 10 corner kicks compared to Wheaton’s three. Ferguson made seven saves, while counterpart Stacey Kronenberg stopped three shots.
