"The weighted schedule was established to ensure the competitive balance of all WPSL matches," said WPSL Associate Commissioner Joe Ferrara. "With the playoffs being extended to eight teams, it allows organizations to maintain motivation throughout the summer for a potential championship run."
The top eight teams in the WPSL East will make the conference playoffs with the East Quarterfinal matches being played on Saturday, July 18th and the East Semifinals & Final on Friday-Sunday, July 24th & 26th.
Some highlights on the 2009 schedule: SoccerPlus CT traveling north to Agawam, MA to take on rival New England on Friday, May 22nd at 6:30 p.m. (in a re-match of the 2008 East Final); the Long Island Fury hosting the Mutiny on Saturday, May 30th at 7:00 p.m. (in a re-match of a 2008 East Semifinal) and on the same day, Lancaster facing the Boston Aztecs (who should be bolstered by their WPS Boston Breakers affiliation) at home at 7:00 p.m.
To conclude the regular season, the match-up pitting SoccerPlus CT at Long Island on Saturday, July 11th at 7:00 p.m. could be for sole claim to the East title.
