October 20, 2008

ORONO, Maine - The Vermont Catamounts and Maine Black Bears played to a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of action in an America East women's soccer match on Sunday afternoon.

Maine’s Carolyne Nellis scored the game's first goal at the 31:35 mark of the first half but Vermont equalized in the 65th minute on a Carson Laderoute header.

With the tie, the Catamounts are unbeaten in two straight games after picking up a 5-0 victory over UMBC on Thursday. Vermont moves to 3-12-1 overall and 1-4-1 in America East. The Black Bears push their record to 5-4-6 on the year and stand all even at 2-2-2 in league play.

"This was a great game as both teams played hard and left everything they had on the field," said Vermont head coach Kwame Lloyd. "This is a character win for us, we bent but we did not break. Many players stepped up in this game, our defense was great, Eliza was outstanding in goal, and our midfield is starting to click. I'm very proud of the effort the team gave and we are excited heading into the game at Albany on Thursday."

In the 32nds minute, off one of Maine's 10 corners in the game, Kelsey Wilson was able to make a strong cross along the ground to Nellis who finished off the scoring opportunity.

Vermont came back to answer in the second half. In the 65th minute, Samantha Ciaravino made an attacking run through the midfield and was able to serve a cross in the box. Vermont native Laderoute was there to head the ball past UMaine goalie Jasmine Phillips for her team-leading fifth goal of the year.

Neither team was able to find the go-ahead goal in the remaining minutes of regulation or the two overtime sessions.

Eliza Bradley (Charlotte, Vt.) finished the game with 11 stops for Vermont, marking the fifth time this year she has recorded double-digits in saves. Phillips was credited with three saves for Maine.

The Black Bears owned a 25-7 advantage in shots and 10-1 lead in corner kicks.
