Velaj Named W-League U19 POY

Passion Forward Led Team With Eight Goals

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Connecticut Passion forward Fortuna Velaj was named the W-League’s U19 Player of the Year in an announcement made at the league’s championship banquet Friday.

The 18-year-old Velaj led the expansion Passion with eight goals, including three in a pair of 2-1 victories over the Boston Renegades.

Her efforts helped lead the Passion to a fifth-place finish, six points out of a playoff spot in their first year of existence.

Velaj is currently playing for Virginia Beach is in the USL Super-20 League.

The W-League also announced other award winners Friday, including Most Valuable Player Sarah Steinmann (Atlanta Silverbacks), Coach of the Year Tony Anglin (Atlanta), Defender of the Year Sue Weber (Long Island Rough Riders) and Goalkeeper of the Year Mallori Lofton-Malachi (Tampa Bay Hellenic).
