Laderoute Scores Golden Goal for Catamounts

August 29, 2009

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Carson Laderoute (Rutland, Vt.) finished off a cross 2:12 into overtime, her second goal of the day, to lift the Vermont Catamounts past the University of Montreal, 3-2, on the first day of the TD Bank Classic at Centennial Field Friday.

Montreal got on the board first at the 10:50 mark when Veronique Laverdiere hit a 15-yard blooper over the head of Vermont goalkeeper Eliza Bradley (Charlotte, Vt.). The Catamounts answered 15 seconds later to even the score. Gabby Bonfigli (Essex Junction, Vt.) sent a cross in front of the goalmouth and Laderoute was there to finish it off to make the score 1-1.

UVM went ahead 2-1 when Jessica Becker (Woodbridge, Conn.) put back a rebound of Bonfigli’s initial shot to give the Catamounts the lead. UVM held onto the lead as the teams headed into halftime.

Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Montreal evened the game back up with an unusual goal. A UVM defender tried to clear the ball, but it glanced off UM’s Isabelle Dumais and into the net to knot the game up, 2-2.

Vermont could not find the go-ahead goal in the final 35 minutes of regulation despite having one shot hit the crossbar and another opportunity called back because of offsides.

In the extra session, the Catamounts got the game-winner when Bonfigli carried the ball down the right wing, served the ball into the box to freshman Bethany Kwarta (Pittsford, Mass.) who returned the service back across the box to find Laderoute with the game-winning touch.

Bradley and freshman Alyssa Kelly combined to make seven saves in the game. Bonfigli had a hand in all three goals for the Catamounts, picking up three assists.

Because Montreal is a Canadian team, the stats and result of the game do not go into UVM’s official statistics of the season, due to NCAA rules. The NCAA only recognizes games between schools that play in the United States.

Vermont will return to action Sunday when it hosts Central Connecticut (1-0 winners over Siena Friday on a 17th minute strike from Leah Blayney) at 1:30 p.m. at Centennial Field in the second day of the TD Bank Classic. Siena will face Montreal at 11 a.m. Sunday.
