UVM Women Drop Opener

Vermont Can't Keep Pace With Navy

August 24, 2008

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Vermont women’s soccer team dropped its season opener, 3-0, to Navy Saturday in the first ever meeting between the two programs.

Senior Kristen Laraway scored twice to lead Navy, which also was playing its first game of the year.

"The score was not indicative of the way we played today," said Vermont head coach Kwame Lloyd, who made his debut on the Catamount sidelines. "There were a lot more mental mistakes than physical mistakes. I stressed to the team that we did not leave the field defeated today, just more determined as we move forward."

Laraway put the Mids on the board early, scoring her first goal of the year just three minutes into the contest with a blast from 25 yards out.

After the opening tally, the Catamounts were able to hold Navy in check for the remainder of the half, despite the Mids holding a 14-1 advantage in shots and a 10-0 edge in corners in the first 45 minutes of action.

Vermont gave up another quick goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Anastasia Abid scored in the 55th minute to push Navy's lead to 2-0. Abid collected a throw-in in Navy's offensive half and was able to elude the Vermont defense to fire a shot into the left corner of the net.

Laraway closed out the scoring in the 75th minute with a shot from 15 yards out for her second goal of the game and season.

Navy finished the game out shooting Vermont, 29-3 overall and held a 13-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Navy goalkeeper Lizzie Barnes made two stops in 80 minutes of action before being relieved by Beth Reed for the final 10 minutes. Reed did not have to make a save. Barnes' two stops earned her the 22nd shutout of her career, tying the all-time mark in Navy women's soccer. Vermont's Eliza Bradley (Charlotte, Vt.) made 11 stops for the Catamounts.
