Geibel Will Play for Brisbane Strikers
December 3, 2008
BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Former Vermont men's soccer player and Boxford, Mass. native Justin Geibel will play professional soccer in Australia for the Brisbane Strikers.
Geibel, who graduated from UVM in May, heads for Brisbane this week to train for the upcoming season.
The Strikers compete in two of the top leagues in Australia, the year-round regional Brisbane Premier League and the Hyundai Queensland States League, the top league in Australia that runs from late March through August. The Strikers were the QSL regular season and cup runner-ups in 2008. Current Cats assistant coach Ross Duncan was instrumental in Geibel signing with Brisbane. Duncan played for the Strikers and the Queensland Lions in Australia from 2003-05 prior to joining the UVM staff.
A hard-working walk-on who earned a spot as a regular in the Vermont midfield, Geibel played in 63 matches from 2003 through 2007 and recorded seven assists. He was a key player as UVM reached the America East title game his junior and senior seasons. In 2007, Geibel played in all 22 games helping the Catamounts win the America East Championship and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. That season he tied for the team-lead with four assists, all setting up game-winning goals.
Geibel is one of many former Catamounts who have played professionally in North America and abroad. Among them are two that are currently playing professionally overseas, Tony Anderson '05, who plays for Newry City FC in the Irish Premier League, Adam Wallace '03, who played last summer in China after being a regular for KSV Roeselare in the top league in Belgium, and Geibel's classmate, Panos Georgiadis '08, a member of the Vermont Voltage in the USL Premier Development League.
