Vermont Loses Second Straight

September 23, 2008

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Steven Miller's second half goal snapped a 1-1 deadlock to lift Colgate to a 2-1 win over Vermont Monday afternoon in men’s soccer action at Centennial Field.

The defeat was the second straight for UVM (3-2-2) after it opening the 2008 campaign unbeaten in its first five matches.

"Credit Colgate for better execution today," said Vermont coach Jesse Cormier. "As a team we are disappointed in not getting more out of today's game. We will continue to learn from our effort today and get better as we move forward toward the conference season."

Colgate (4-2-2) was sharper in the first half and after a goal by Chris Ross in the 16th minute, took a 1- 0 lead into the locker room at the break.

Vermont came out strong in the second stanza creating several early scoring opportunities including a sequence of three corner kicks in the 55th minute. The Cats found the equalizer after being awarded a free kick after the third corner. A well-placed ball on the restart by Jordan Crasilneck from 40 yards out was redirected on a header by Jake McFadden (Colchester, Vt.) in the goalmouth to tie the game.

The Raiders regained the lead just eight minutes later as Miller, unmarked at point blank range, knocked home a cross from the left side by Matt Leach for his third goal of the season.

Colgate would weather several other Vermont scoring bids down the stretch for the victory. A low drive from Crasilneck curved just wide of the mark with 15 minutes to go. Twice in the last two minutes UVM had chances turned aside, one on a flurry after on a long free kick by Drew Smalley (Beaverton, Ore.) and another on a Cats corner kick within the last 30 seconds.

With a 12-5 advantage in the second half, Vermont outshot the Raiders, 17-10, and had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Colgate keeper Chris Miller made seven saves while UVM's Roger Scully (East Lyme, Conn.) finished with just one stop.

The goal for McFadden was the second of the season for the senior back who came into his final year without a point. Crasilneck now has an America East-leading five assists and Monday he became the second Catamount in program history to record 20 career assists.

Vermont is back in action this weekend taking on a pair of Atlantic-10 and New England rivals at the UMass Soccer Classic at Amherst, Mass. The Catamounts meet Rhode Island Friday at 4:30pm and take on the host Minutemen, who advanced to last season's NCAA College Cup, Sunday at 2:00pm.
