US Women Convene for Exhibitions
Sundhage Names Roster of 25
April 20, 2008
CHICAGO – In their first action since winning the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying tournament, 25 members of the U.S. women’s soccer team will convene in North Carolina on April 22 to gear up for a three-game exhibition slate against Australia and Canada.
All 25 players will travel and train in the three cities, but head coach Pia Sundhage will suit up only 18 players for each match.
The U.S. opens the tour on April 27 against Australia in Cary, N.C., then travels to Birmingham, Ala., to face Australia again May 3 before finishing the tour on May 10 against Canada at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.
So far, the U.S. women are 10-0-1 under Sundhage in 2008, having won tournaments in China in January, Portugal in March and Mexico in April.
All of the players who have been training and playing regularly with the USA over the past few months will be competing for spots on the 18-player game rosters, with the exception of midfielder Angie Woznuk, who is still rehabbing a back injury.
Two 2004 Olympic gold medalists are back with the squad after prolonged absences. Midfielder Aly Wagner rejoins the team after recovering from a double-hernia surgery in late January. Defender Heather Mitts is also back on the roster after missing out on Olympic qualifying while taking the final steps back to fitness during her recovery from ACL surgery.
