New Englanders and the US National Teams
Few can argue with the immense contibutions that New Englanders and others with New England ties have made to both the men's and women's US National teams over the years.
|
Kristine Lilly of Wilton, CT has more appearance for the US National team than any other player, male or female
|
From as early as the 1950 World Cup, when several players with New England ties were on the US team that historically beat England 1-0 in Belo Horizonte, to the huge number of appearances that Kristine Lilly of Wilton, CT has made for the US Women's team, New England has often provided the key players in some of the US National Teams' finest hours.
I was there in October of 2001, for instance, when former Rev Joe Max Moore scored two goals against Jamaica in the final international ever to be played at Foxboro Stadium. Those two goals were enough to qualify the US men for the 2002 World Cup that day, and led to what most soccer fans believe has been the USA's finest hour so far on the world's biggest soccer stage.
It was also a New Englander, Connecticut native, Tony DiCicco, who coached the Women's US National Team to their finest hour, when he led them to the 1999 World Cup in Pasadena, CA. And let's not forget Lilly's header off the line in over-time that saved the USA's skin that day and enabled them to take the game to that memorable penalty shootout climax.
In this part of the site we'll look more closely at the role that players and coaches with New England ties have made to the US national team over the years, and we'll keep tabs on the latest news from US Soccer as national teams of all ages continue to compete on the world stage.
