URI Tames Black Bears
Ends Five Game Losing Streak
October 1, 2007
KINGSTON, R.I. – Poland native Lukasz Tumicz scored twice and added an assist to lead the University of Rhode Island men’s soccer team to a 4-1 win over Maine Sunday.
Junior Kedan Crosby also had a multiple-point performance, notching a goal and an assist to help the Rams (2-6-0) break a horrific five-game losing streak that saw them go 361:31 minutes without scoring until Crosby’s goal in the 6th minute Sunday. The streak dated back to Sept. 7.
"I'm happy with the way we played today," coach John O'Connor told URI Athletics “And we haven't necessarily been playing poorly, we've just had trouble creating quality chances - and finishing when we have the opportunity to do so. It finally came together for us this afternoon, though, and that's exactly the confidence booster we need heading into the Atlantic-10 schedule."
Just six minutes into the game, Crosby headed a cross form senior Danleigh Borman into the top left corner of the net for the 1-0 lead. Just over 11 minutes later, Tumicz extended the Rhody advantage when he directed a pass from senior Geoffrey Cameron (Attleboro, Mass.) past Maine goalkeeper Nemanja Kostic.
Maine's Thomas McCole cut the URI lead in half in the 27th minute when he headed a shot past sophomore Chris Pennock.
Tumicz struck again at the start of the second half, heading a Crosby cross into the right corner of the net just five minutes in, before setting up freshman Greg Balicki's (Wilbraham, Mass.) first collegiate goal to make it 3-0.
In the 62nd minute, the Black Bears were called for a foul outside the box, resulting in a URI free kick. Tumicz touched a quick pass to Balicki, who maneuvered around the wall of Maine defenders and blasted a shot past Kostic for the Rams' final goal of the afternoon.
Rhode Island outshot Maine, 23-7, and held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-4.
Pennock made two saves in net for URI while Kostic recorded seven stops for the Black Bears.
