Nets Game-Tying Goal in First MLS Start
April 7, 2008
University of Rhode Island product Geoff Cameron had a smashing debut for the Houston Dynamo in his first MLS start Sunday.
Cameron, who found out he was in the starting 11 just 15 minutes before the game, blasted a game tying goal in second half stoppage time to help the two-time defending champs salvage a 3-3 draw with FC Dallas.
"Coach (Dominic Kinnear) came up to me and said, 'You're going to start outside right mid,' " Cameron told the Houston Chronicle. "It was a great opportunity, but I was really, really nervous."
Cameron also set up the Dynamo’s second goal Sunday when his cross to Brian Ching was put in by Dallas defender Drew Moor for an own goal. The tying goal came from 18 yards out with time expiring.
"It shows that (Cameron) was a confident kid stepping onto the field," Kinnear told the Chronicle.
Cameron was a third round pick (42nd overall) out of URI. A 2007 NSCAA All-Mid Atlantic Region First Team selection, he received the Atlantic 10 Conference's inaugural Midfielder of the Year award last season after tallying two goals and three assists. He also earned Preseason All-Conference honors.
