WORCESTER, Mass. – Two of New Hampshire’s top performers from last year got back at Sunday, leading the Wildcats to a 2-1 victory over Holy Cross in the season opener for both women’s programs.

Seniors Michelle Sheehan (Belmont, Mass.) and Caitlin Whelan (Weymouth, Mass.), the respective 2007 America East Striker and Midfielder of the Year, each tallied their first goals of the 2008 season to give UNH (1-0) the win over Holy Cross (0-1).

In the 22nd minute, Sheehan, who tallied a team-high 11 goals last season, took a feed from sophomore Amy Avitabile (Pembroke, Mass.) and beat Holy Cross goalkeeper Jessica Stone top shelf from 18 yards out to give the Wildcats 1-0 lead.

The game stayed 1-0 through halftime and into the 78th minute where it was Avitabile again setting up a tally. This time it was Whelan who took the pass and deposited the ball into the right side of the net past Stone.

Junior goalkeeper Ally Yost played well in net, recording five saves for UNH. Yost almost posted her first shutout of the season until Lauren Wright’s header found the back of the net with 2:05 remaining in regulation. Stone, meanwhile, stopped seven shots for Holy Cross.

The Wildcats, who outshot the Crusaders, 24-10, return to action Friday, Aug. 29 when they travel to Vermont to kick off the UVM TD Banknorth Classic.
