UMass Goalie Nets Shutout Record

Simmons Sets Mark in 1-0 Win over Hawks

October 7, 2007

HARTFORD, Conn. – Durham, New Hampshire’s Zack Simmons broke the UMass career shut out record with his 17th career shutout Saturday in a 1-0 win over Hartford.

Simmons’ third shutout of the season vaulted him past Bryan O’Quinn’s previous school record of 16 set in 2001.

The Minutemen gave Simmons a goal early, netting a corner kick in the 10th minute of the game. Kenny Cook scored his first goal of the season off of a corner kick taken by Douglas Rappaport.

The corner kick was the only one in the first half for the Minutemen. After Cook’s preliminary header attempt was blocked, he sent the rebound into the center of the net for the goal.

Hartford had possession of the ball for the majority of the game, but were unable to produce a goal even though they out shot UMass, 9-7.

There was a lot of pushing and shoving by both teams as the Minutemen generated 22 fouls and the Hawks had 24. Both teams also racked up three yellow cards each.
