Upset West Virginia to Advance to Big East Championship

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The No. 3 seeded Connecticut women’s soccer team advanced to the title game of the BIG EAST Championship, beating West Virginia in penalty kicks, 4-3, after the two clubs battled to a 1-1 draw after two overtimes on Friday.
UConn will face the winner of Saturday’s second semifinal between Marquette and Notre Dame.
UConn junior Annie Yi got the Huskies (7-8-6) on the board with a goal in the opening minutes of the second half. Yi scored the goal on a feed from junior Ashley O’Brien 1:24 into the second half. It was the second straight game Yi has scored and her sixth of the season.
West Virginia (13-2-6) snapped a streak of more than 425 scoreless minutes against the Huskies with the equalizer minutes later. Redshirt freshman Erica Henderson netted home a chip shot for her fifth goal of the year. Junior Nicole Mailloux picked up an assist on the play.
WVU totaled 12 corner kicks, including seven in the second half, while the Huskies did not attempt one the entire 110 minutes.
Connecticut senior goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe, who was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year on Thursday night, totaled seven saves as well as a goal during the penalty kicks. West Virginia counterpart Kerri Butler totaled three saves.
