U17s Advance to Quarterfinals
Tie With France Sends Americans to Next Round
November 5, 2008
AUCKLAND, New Zealand A goal from Vicki DiMartino gave the U.S. Under-17 Womens National Team a 1-1 tie with France, earning the team a trip to quarterfinals in the FIFA U17 World Cup.
DiMartino, the sister of Boston College standout Gina DiMartino, scored in the 57th minute to put the U.S. up 1-0. But a goal from Frances Lea Rubio tied the score in the 72nd minute.
Still, the tie was enough to send the Americans to the quarterfinals where they will now take on Korea Republic on Nov. 9. Korea Republic won Group D with a 3-0 victory against the England, pushing the English to second place. The U.S. and France ended Group C play tied with four points each, but the USA advanced to the quarterfinals due to a superior goal differential.
On DiMartinos goal, she took a short pass from Courtney Verloo and scooped a right-footed shot from 17 yards out that flew over France goalkeeper Laetitia Philippe, skimmed off the crossbar and sailed into the side netting at the right corner.
The spectacular goal capped an impressive period of U.S. pressure. After coming out strong in the second half, the U.S. goal put France in the precarious position of having to score twice in 33 minutes to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
Les Bleus did manage one goal, a spectacular 28-yard strike from Lea Rubio in the 72nd minute that flew into the upper right corner over U.S. goalkeeper Taylor Vancil, who played a splendid match in the U.S. nets, making 11 total saves.
The final part of the match featured furious attacking from the French, stoic defense from the Americans and several U.S. counter-attacks that almost earned a winner.
