FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution were dealt an enormous blow Tuesday when it was learned that striker Taylor Twellman will be out six weeks after he undergoes arthroscopic surgery on his knee tomorrow.

Revs striker Taylor Twellman will miss at least six weeks after knee surgery.

Twellman, the Revs’ all-time leading scorer, is scheduled to have his right knee scoped Wednesday after tearing his medial meniscus in training last Thursday. Twellman missed Saturday’s season opener against Houston and was replaced by Adam Cristman.

Head team physician Dr. Bertram Zarins will perform the procedure at Massachusetts General Hospital. The team said Twellman is expected to miss at least six weeks, but they will make full prognosis after surgery.

Also on the injury front, captain Steve Ralston was diagnosed with a dislocated left shoulder following a tackle in the 61st minute team’s season-opening 3-0 victory over the Dynamo. He will undergo further tests on his shoulder tomorrow to fully determine the extent of his injury and his expected recovery period.

Cristman will likely start in place of Twellman again in Thursday’s primetime match at Chicago, with Kheli Dube the top options off the bench. Ralston was replaced by Gary Flood in the midfield Saturday. He could start against the Fire or the Revs could switch to a 4-4-2 alignment and insert newly acquired defender Chase Hilgenbrinck on the backline.

Thursday’s game will be broadcast on ESPN2 as one of MLS’ weekly Primetime games.
