Twellman Out Indefinitely

Revs' Striker Suffering From Concussion-Related Symptoms

October 28, 2008

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Revolution forward Taylor Twellman will be out indefinitely with concussion-related symptoms that have bothered him since he was hit in the head by LA Galaxy goalkeeper Steve Cronin in August.

The Revolution announced Tuesday, two days before their MLS Semifinals tilt with Chicago, that Twellmen has been suffering “on-going issues” since his collision with Cronin on Aug. 30.

Twellman, 28, was punched in the head by Cronin while heading in a goal in the first half but continued to play the remainder of the game. Cronin, who was coming off his line to clear the ball when he connected with Twellman, also suffered a broken finger in the collision and missed the rest of the season.

Twellman did not dress for the Revs’ following game, a CONCACAF Champions League match against Joe Public FC on Sept. 2, but returned to the field in the team’s next game on Sept. 6 and played 90 minutes at the Columbus Crew. He played 90 minutes in the team’s final eight matches of this season.

“Taylor has been experiencing some on-going issues related to the concussion he suffered against LA,” said Revolution Vice President of Player Personnel Michael Burns. “Concussions, especially repeated concussions, are very dangerous and the most important thing for Taylor and his future – both off the field and on – is to get the rest he needs so he can return to normal as quickly as possible.”

Twellman missed 14 regular-season games this year while battling myriad injuries, including torn knee cartilage, ankle sprain, hip flexor and concussion symptoms. Still, he finished the year tied for the team lead in goals with eight while adding two assists. He has scored 99 career goals in 172 games spanning seven Major League Soccer seasons.

The Revolution open the MLS Playoffs Thursday, hosting the Fire at Gillette Stadium.
