Twellman MLS Player of the Week

Revs Striker Scored 2 Goals in 4-0 Win Over New York

June 9, 2009

New England Revolution forward Taylor Twellman was voted Major League Soccer’s player of the week following his two-goal performance in the Revolution’s 4-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls at Gillette Stadium Sunday.

The Major League Soccer player of the week is selected each week by a panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters.

Twellman’s two-goal effort was the 16th of his career and included his historic 100th career goal. His first goal of the evening was his 100th strike, making him the youngest player (29 years, 100 days) and fastest player (174 games) to reach the century mark in league history.

Twellman bested Jeff Cunningham’s previous mark for the youngest player to score 100 goals (31 years, 360 days). He is one of five players to reach the 100-goal mark in MLS.

Sunday’s appearance was just his second of the 2009 season after he missed the first nine games of the year – and the 2008 MLS Cup Playoffs – with ongoing medical issues, including severe whiplash symptoms stemming from a punch to the head he sustained while scoring a goal against the LA Galaxy on Aug. 30, 2008, at Gillette Stadium.

This is Twellman’s eighth career player of the week award, and his first since Week 6 of the 2007 season.

Twellman and the Revolution (4-3-4, 16 points) will travel to face the Kansas City Wizards (4-5-4, 16 points) this Saturday at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m.; the game will be televised live on TV38 and on the radio by the WEEI Radio Network.
