Tough Sunday for UVM Soccer
Second Half Goals Keep Both Catamount Teams Winless
Sept. 21, 2009
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Babayele Sodade scored off a Two-Boys Gumede free kick with less than seven minutes remaining to lift Alabama-Birmingham to a 1-0 victory over the University of Vermont mens soccer team in the second day of the Memphis Classic.
It was the fourth consecutive game the Catamounts held a team to one goal or less, but they came up just short as they fell to 0-4-3 on the year.
I thought we played well, but we just didn't take care of key moments, UVM head coach Jesse Cormier said. We had a really good second half. I thought it was good enough for us to win, but we squandered our chances.
UVM was able to apply plenty of offensive pressure as it forced Alabama-Birmingham goalie Carl Woszcynski to make seven second-half saves.
In the 84th minute, however, Gumede found Sodade at the back of the box off of a free kick just outside of the penalty area. Sodade was able to slide the ball past UVM goalie Tom Critz (Enfield, Conn.) for the game-winning goal.
"There were some good things to come out of this weekend," Cormier said, despite the Sunday loss. "As a group we have to start stepping up during certain parts of a game to be successful and I believe we will."
Freshman Jordan Smith led the Catamounts with four shots during the game, while Critz made six saves.
Vermont returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday at Quinnipiac.
Siena 3, Vermont women 1
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- The Siena Saints scored three unanswered goals to erase an early 1-0 deficit and post a 3-1 victory over the Vermont Catamounts in non-conference women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon. It was the sixth straight win for the Saints, who improve to 6-1 on the year.
An own goal by the Saints gave Vermont a 1-0 lead. Siena goalkeeper Liz Barna inadvertently punched in a corner kick from freshman Megan Rozumalski in the 19th minute.
The Saints evened the score just before halftime. Kaitlyn Sharo finished off passes from Caitlin Cahalan and Cara Riley to beat UVM goalkeeper Eliza Bradley (Charlotte, Vt.) on the left side in the 40th minute.
Midway through the second half, Siena scored twice in just over a minute to take a two goal lead. Christina Macera's first goal of the year came in the 79th minute. She was on the back post and knocked in a free kick service from Cara Riley to put the Saints up 2-1.
A minute later, Ashleigh Barone added an insurance goal and her third tally of the year off a corner kick.
The Saints were able to hold off Vermont in the final 10 minutes to pick up their sixth win of the season.
Siena outshot Vermont 35-13 in the game and Bradley finished the game with 10 saves for Vermont. Barna was credited with three stops for the Saints.
Vermont falls to 0-6-1 on the season. The Catamounts return to action on Friday (Sept. 25) when they travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to take on Colgate at 7 p.m. UVM opens up America East action on Sunday (Sept. 27) when it hosts Albany at 2 p.m. at Centennial Field.
