NORTON, Mass. -- Nine different Wheaton College men’s soccer players chalked up at least one point in leading the Lyons past the University of Southern Maine, 5-1, on Saturday to open the two-day, four-team Adidas Kick-Off Classic at Keefe Field.

The win was the second straight for the Lyons to open the season. The Huskies dropped their second straight. The match was the first ever between the two sides.

Wheaton posted the game’s first three goals and held a 2-0 advantage at the half. Junior Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, Mass.) finished classmate Kyle Sye’s (Acton, Mass.) cross-field pass with 19:47 to play in the opening stanza before sophomore Pablo Mena tallied an unassisted goal a little over six minutes later.

Sophomore Conor Finn (Kennebunk, Maine) made it a 3-0 game after outrunning the Husky defense and placing his shot into the lower right corner of the net in the 52nd minute.

Junior Nick Johnson’s (South Portland, Maine) header off a corner kick taken by junior Alex Burnham (North Yarmouth, Maine) sliced Southern Maine’s deficit to two with 22:38 to go, but senior Tyler Ostholthoff (Hopkinton, N.H.) quickly made it a three-goal margin with a tally just 2:13 later.

Sophomore Matt Solomon (Avon, Conn.) completed the scoring with 10 seconds on the clock, knocking home his first collegiate goal, as the hosts held a 16-4 shot advantage.

Lyon junior Chris Smart (Brookfield, Conn.) had one save in the win, while Husky junior David Kreps (Agawam, Mass.) turned aside three shots.

Gordon College women 3, Southern Maine 1

GORHAM, Maine -- The Gordon College Scots built a two-goal lead in the opening half en route to a 3-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women’s soccer match Saturday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.

The victory levels the Scots overall record at 1-1. The Huskies, playing their home opener, slip to 0-2.

The Scots got on the board in the 24th minute when senior Christen Peters (Feeding Hills, Mass.) converted an assist from junior Kelly Donlan (Burlington, Conn.) for her team’s first goal of the season. Sophomore Elisabeth Cheesman (Winslow, Maine) tallied an unassisted goal off a rebound in the 34th minute to make it 2-0.

The Scots held a wide edge in play in the opening 45 minutes, out-shooting the Huskies, 10-0, and piling up a 7-1 margin in corner kicks.

Senior Emily Purinton (Boxborough, Mass.) added a third goal for the Scots with an assist going to freshman Ally Lanoue (Pittsfield, Mass.) in the 66th minute. Only seconds after Purinton scored, Southern Maine came back down the middle of the field to score. Freshman Catherine Wise (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) took a pass from junior Chelsea Norton (Scarborough, Maine) at the top of the 18-yard box and slipped a rolling shot by Gordon senior goalkeeper Ally Ytzen.

Ytzen finished the match with two saves. USM senior keeper Alison Bradley was credited with seven stops.
