Tired Pioneers Falter in Canada
Lose 4-0 to London
May 27, 2008
ONTARIO – At this point, the Western Mass. Lady Pioneers could use a break
The Pioneers played their second game in as many days Sunday, making the trip from Rochester, NY Saturday night to London, Ontario and could not muster the energy to make any offensive attacks in a 4-0 loss to the London Gryphons.
The Gryphons, attempting to recover from a season opening loss on the road at the hands of the Toronto Lady Lynx, came out firing in their home opener
London cracked the West Mass defense in the 26th minute when Laura Roberts broke down the right flank and sent in a swirling left footed cross that Sarnia native Treena Ferguson connected on with a diving header that fooled West Mass goalkeeper Brianna Bucher. London continued to pressure the Western Mass back line, creating 13 shots in the first half that the Lady Pioneers answered with 12 saves.
London would get the crucial second goal in the 67th minute when Indiana natives Ashley Seib connected with a shot off the post and Stephanie Lynch followed the rebound to put the Gryphons up 2-0.
The goal seemed to deflate Western Mass and Treena Ferguson added two more late goals (83rd & 87th minute) to seal the victory and her first hat trick in the W-League. London’s goal keeper Kelly Zinkieiwich (Oakville, ON) earned the shutout, contributing a five save effort.
