Sept. 11, 2009
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Four different players scored a goal as the Fairfield University womens soccer team defeated the University of Hartford, 4-0 Tuesday evening at Al-Marzook Field. The win improves the Stags record to 2-3, while the Hawks fall to 2-2.
Jasmin Corniel led the Stags with three points, including the game-winning tally. Casey Frobey had two assists as well for the Stags.
The duo connected on the game-winner just over 15 minutes into the contest. Frobey fed the ball across the box from the far side and Corniel knocked it home inside the near post. That would be the only tally of the first half as the Stags lead 1-0 at halftime.
Lauren Reilly made the score 2-0 as she put in a corner kick from the foot of Adrienne Boyer with just over 29 minutes to play. Chrissie Sidie scored with 21 minutes to play in the game, collecting a rebound from a shot of Frobey.
Rachel Madasci made it 4-0 Fairfield, tallying the first goal of her collegiate career with just over 60 seconds to play in the game. Corniel fed the ball past the last defender to the foot of Madasci in the box and she knocked it home.
Kelly Boudreau earned the victory in net for the Stags, making two saves to earn her first shutout of the year and the 10th of her career. Lauren Brodeur made five saves in net for the Hawks.
The Stags will return to action Tuesday when they host Bryant at 7 p.m. in the home opener. The Hawks welcome the CCSU Blue Devils to West Hartford Sunday at 2 p.m. for the second of three straight home dates.
Quinnipiac 2, Stony Brook 1 (2 OT)
STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Sophomore Kristina Del Mistro scored the game-winning goal in double overtime as the Quinnipiac University womens soccer team defeated Stony Brook, 2-1, Thursday evening.
Freshman midfielder Jillian Strassner also scored for the Bobcats, good for her first collegiate goal, while sophomore Furtuna Velaj contributed the two assists. Quinnipiacs record improves to 1-1, while the Seawolves drop to 0-4-1 this season.
This was an important win for us, said Quinnipiac head coach Dave Clarke. Despite the late score by Stony Brook, we kept our heads up and continued to create chances which earned us the win. Overall, the win really brought our team together, which will help for our games in the future.
Junior goalkeeper Kendra Margulies did not face any shots on goal in the first, but her counterpart Marisa Viola recorded three saves.
The Bobcats broke the scoreless tie four minutes into the second half. Velaj located Strassner just inside the 18-yard box and she dribbled the ball around a defender and took a hard shot that lifted into the upper right corner out of Violas reach. The assist was Velajs first of the season.
Four minutes from the final whistle, Stony Brook tied the game at 1-1. Freshman Sasha Kershaw evened the score with an unassisted tally of her own for her first goal of the season.
Velaj dished out her second assist of the game in the 108th minute when she passed to Del Mistro on the left side, 15 yards away from the goal. Del Mistro sent a high volley that soared into the right corner of the net for her first goal of the season and the double-overtime win for Quinnipiac.
Margulies and Viola each made six saves in net during the game. Margulies recorded five of those saves in the second half, when the Seawolves showered the Bobcats defensive end with ten shots. Her sixth save came in the second overtime, keeping Quinnipiac alive to earn the win.
The Bobcats return to action Sunday against Lehigh. The game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. at the Quinnipiac Soccer Field.
