In between league games the Revs won the SuperLiga and advanced to the US Open Cup Semifinals. Now the Revs, who despite the gap in league games have remained in first, will take on the Chicago Fire for a chance to further solidify their spot at the top of the standings.
Though the Revs have been the best team in MLS through 17 games, Chicago has had few problems against them in their first two meetings. In fact, the Fire has handed the Revs their two worst losses of the season winning 4-0 in Chicago and 3-0 in Foxboro. Chicago's form faded after their early success, but recently the team has gone unbeaten in its last six games and now the Fire sit just four points behind the Revolution.
The Fire may also have gotten stronger with the addition of former US National Team star striker Brian McBride. McBride, however, is away at the Olympics, and Chad Barrett, the player they traded to Toronto to acquire him, had been their top scorer with five goals and four assists. With forwards Calen Carr and Patrick Nyarko likely to miss Saturday's match with injuries, the Fire may be short on strikers.
When it comes to rest though, the Fire have a clear edge. While the Revs have been in the midst of a very busy schedule thanks to their success in MLS, the US Open Cup, and SuperLiga, Chicago has only had league games to worry about and have had their games a week apart.
On Tuesday, the Revs defeated the Houston Dynamo on penalty kicks in the SuperLiga final after playing 120 minutes. If the Revs haven't fully recovered, it may be tough to avoid a letdown after winning just their second major trophy in team history.
