Stingrays Can't Hang On

Crusaders Rally to Force Draw
June 9, 2008

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Rhode Island Stingrays – no strangers to late-game collapses at home after a 5-4 last-second loss to the Vermont Voltage earlier this year – fell victim again to a late letdown and poor timing, surrendering a 90th-minute goal to Cape Cod and allowing the Crusaders to draw, 2-2, on Saturday.

Crusaders captain Graham Munro tied the game, 1-1, early after Tim Ritter put Rhode Island ahead. But Munro gave it right back, surrendering an own goal to give the Stingrays the 2-1 lead, just a few weeks after the Crusaders beat the same team, 4-1.

But it would be Chris Wright, a late sub for the Crusaders, who hooked up with fellow sub Chris Banks, who deposited the late goal to salvage a tie.

Cape Cod improved to 4-2-1 in the PDL, good for first place in the New England Division. Meanwhile, fourth-place Rhode Island dropped to 0-4-3.
