September 28, 2008
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Senior Igor Santos’s goal in the 87th minute broke a 1-1 tie between the Bentley and Southern Connecticut men’s soccer teams and gave the host Owls a 2-1 win Saturday night.
With just under two minutes gone in the first half, Southern Connecticut got on the scoreboard when sophomore midfielder Paul Templeton notched his first goal of the season.
Nearly 65 minutes of time elapsed before another goal was scored. Bentley (4-5, 1-4 NE-10) freshman Eric Heuze (Geneva, Switzerland/International School of Geneva), who has created several great scoring chances in his first season, finally put one in the net to tie the score. Junior Bill Nussdorfer (Harvard/Bromfield School) had the assist, his first of the season.
With overtime looking like a certainty, Santos struck for Southern Connecticut (4-4-2, 3-1-2) with just 3:25 remaining on the clock.
Shots on goal were tough to come by in this game with both goalies called on to make only two saves combined. The game was also physical with 28 total fouls called and three yellow cards given out.

In a game that was played in a steady rain, the Southern Connecticut women withstood the elements and posted a 3-0 win over Bentley Saturday afternoon. Freshman midfielder Jenna Mallico had a goal and an assist for the Owls.
With the field soaked with rain, both teams struggled to find their footing, but Southern Connecticut (5-3, 3-2) scored three times in the second half to take the win.
After a scoreless first half, Mallico, Southern Connecticut’s leading scorer, notched her fifth goal of the season when she dribbled into the box, shot from 10 yards away and scored to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute.
Almost five minutes later, junior defender Nicole Burton made the score 2-0 for the Owls when she scored unassisted. In the 79th minute, Gina DellaRose added an insurance goal for Southern Connecticut when she scored off an assist from Mallico.
Sophomore goalie Kara Smith was strong in net for Bentley (3-6-1, 1-3-1), stopping seven shots.
