Toronto Cuts Connecticut Native; Former Brown Coach Leaves Clemson

June 18, 2009

Toronto FC of MLS have waived 22-year old striker Johann Smith.

A Hartford native, Smith signed as a free agent last August and had one assist in 14 matches. Smith signed a contract with Bolton three years ago but failed to stick with Wanderers and moved on to Carlisle United, Darlington and Stockport County before being released and signing with MLS.

More than two months after his arrest for allegedly assaulting his two daughters and placement on leave of absence, Clemson University men’s soccer coach Trevor Adair has resigned.

“After a great deal of thought and prayer,” Adair said in a statement released by the school, “I believe the time is right to pursue other opportunities in coaching and to help transition the Clemson program to new leadership.”

According to published reports, the 48-year old Adair, former men’s soccer coach at Brown, was released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond after being charged with two counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.

Reports say police responded to reports of a fight and were told by witnesses that Adair struck his two daughters several times, causing minor injuries, according to published reports.

Adair has a 208-115-33 record in 18 seasons as a head coach at Brown and Clemson. He led the Tigers to the 2005 Men’s College Cup semifinals and five appearances in the NCAA Division I quarterfinals.
