SoccerPlus, the East-North region regular season champion, beat New England in their two regular season games, but it was the Mutiny who got the last laugh, riding a second-half goal from UConn’s Erin Clark to a 1-0 victory over the Reds (13-1-0) in the WPSL East region final on Sunday.
Now the Mutiny (12-2-0) joins the Rush, Ajax America and MYSC Lady Blues as the only four teams remaining in the 51-team WPSL.
"I couldn't be happier with the way everyone played," said Mutiny coach Tony Horta. "I really think this was a triumph of heart, commitment and an understanding of California and what it would take to get there."
New England will square off with the Rush (9-1-3, 8-1-3 WPSL Big Sky-North) at 5:00 p.m. this Saturday, with the winner earning the right to player either the Lady Blues or Ajax for the league’s championship on Sunday.
Going up against the Big Sky-North regular season champion Utah (9-4-0), the Rush came back from a 2-1 deficit and ran away with the eventual 6-2 victory. All-Conference forward & U.S. U-20 star Jess McDonald scored the eventual game-winner in the first half as part of three unanswered goals that put Arizona up 4-2 at the half.
"To earn a trip to the Final Four in a league as competitive and physically demanding as the WPSL is a testament to the commitment and dedication shown by the young women on this team," said Arizona coach Chris Fernandez. "These young ladies have been an inspiration not only to the coaching staff, but to the entire community of Tucson."
The Ajax-MYSC contest will be played after the Mutiny’s match at 7:30 p.m. The WPSL final will be held the following day at 7:00 p.m.
