Scurry, US Beat Mexico

Solo Stays on Bench and Americans Rout Mexicans

October 14, 2007

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Briana Scurry started and played the entire game, this time earning a much more favorable result, albeit on an almost meaningless stage, as the U.S. women’s national team downed Mexico, 5-1, in the squad’s first match since the World Cup.

Hope Solo, who was benched in favor of Scurry before the United States’ 4-0 loss to Brazil and subsequently banished from the American’s third place game with Norway after publicly blasting coach Greg Ryan, was back on the sidelines in this game, although she never saw game action.

Abby Wambach scored twice in the second half and Heather O’Reilly, Kristine Lilly and Carli Lloyd also added scores to lead the U.S. to victory in the first-ever soccer game in the Edward Jones Dome and first of three matches against Mexico in the American’s season-ending stretch of exhibitions.

Scurry made two saves on three shots to earn the win.
