Rough Riders Hault Passion
End CT's Winning Streak with 2-1 Victory
July 7, 2008
SOUTHBURY, Conn. – Keri McCabe’s fourth goal of the season in the 69th minute gave the Long Island Rough Riders (7-1-2) a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the CFC Passion in a W-League match-up Sunday.
The loss ends the Passion’s win streak at five and unbeaten streak at six.
McCabe’s goal capped a two-pass play started by a free kick by Susan Weber some 40 yards from the goal. Kristen Habenicht collected Weber’s kick and fed McCabe, who was nine yards out and to the right of Passion goalkeeper Nikki Weiss. Weiss seemed to be indecisive on how to stop McCabe’s high shot and the ball tipped off her fingertips and into the net.
The Rough Riders took an early lead in the eighth minute when Brooke DeRosa put her second marker of the year into the left corner past Weiss. DeRosa was set up on a pretty pass from Sade Ayinde that left DeRosa alone behind the Passion’s defense.
The goal seemed to spark CFC to action, but they were unable to score in the opening half against Lady Riders goalkeeper Megan Frey.
The Passion tied the contest, 1-1, on Ahna Johnson’s (Fairfield) third goal of the season in the 56th minute. Johnson beat Frey to the lower right side of the goal following a perfect pass from Lauren Erwin (Boston University).
Long Island out shot Connecticut, 11-9, while Frey was credited with five saves compared to four for Weiss.
