Without Shalrie Joseph (suspension) and Michael Parkhurst, who was given time to rest after the Olympics, the Revs defense was made up of Chris Tierney and Chris Albright on the outside with Jeff Larentowicz and Jay Heaps in the center. Pat Phelan stepped into Joseph's spot in the center of the midfield. The team was also missing Kenny Mansally and Kheli Dube due to injury.
The Revs first chance came in just the 4th minute, when Mauricio Castro curled a free kick towards the upper left corner of the net from 25 yards out. The Honduran's shot was punched over the bar by goalkeeper Joe Cannon.
Four minutes later San Jose had an opportunity after Larentowicz had a bad give away and Scott Sealy got the ball to Darren Huckerby. Huckerby curled a shot from the top of the box towards the upper corner, but it didn't have enough power to beat 'keeper Matt Reis.
Three minutes after that Ronnie O'Brien put San Jose in the lead. A blocked Huckerby shot fell back to San Jose and eventually Francisco Lima got off a cross to Ronnie O'Brien making a run to the far post. O'Brien, nearly at the end line, sent a well placed soft shot towards the far post. His shot curled around Reis and landed inside the post to give the Earthquakes a 1-0 lead.
The Revs inserted Taylor Twellman for Mauricio Castro at halftime, with Smith moving back into the midfield. The team looked stronger going forward and just four minutes in almost equalized when Sainey Nyassi used his speed to intercept a back pass from the San Jose defense intended for Cannon. One-on-one Nyassi shot right into Cannon, instead of dribbling around him, allowing him to make the save.
What may well be the worst news of the night, depending on the extent of the injury, came in the 55th minute. Reis came out of the match with a right abductor strain and Doug Warren entered in his place. Prior to the injury, Reis had played the last 7,795 minutes in goal in league play for the Revs, an MLS record.
The Revs had another chance in the 60th minute, after Adam Cristman volleyed a Steve Ralston corner on frame from just about 8 yards out. Cannon made the save, but the rebound fell to an onrushing Nyassi, whose long range blast fell just wide of the near post.
San Jose doubled their lead when Scott Sealy found substitute Ryan Johnson inside the box. The Revolution defense stepped forward to play him offside, but Wells Thompson, who had just entered the match less than a minute before for Nyassi didn't step forward and kept him onside. Alone in on goal, Johnson curled a shot around Warren to make it 2-0.
Five minutes later Sealy put the game out of reach. On a quick counter attack after Pat Phelan gave away the ball near San Jose's box, Huckerby ran down the left flank into the Revolution's half before sending a pass to a wide open Sealy at the top of the box. The Trinidadian striker made no mistake, slotting it through Warren's legs to make it 3-0.
O'Brien made it 4-0 in the 87th minute, curling a left footed shot from just outside the box into the upper corner.
