Third year ‘keeper Brad Knighton was handed his debut in goal and made three saves after Matt Reis was ruled out due to pain and swelling in his right knee. Also out were forward Taylor Twellman, midfielders Steve Ralston and Mauricio Castro, and defenders Gabriel Badilla and Chris Albright. With the exception of Knighton, the Revs used the same starting XI that won 1-0 in San Jose last week, but were forced to switch things up at halftime with coach Steve Nicol opting to replace an ailing Sainey Nyassi (hamstring) with Amaechi Igwe.
Knighton was forced into action in just the 12th minute, when Dane Richards got inside the 18-yard box and fired a low shot. Knighton made a good diving save to keep Richards off the scoreboard.
Shalrie Joseph, who was a catalyst for the Revolution attack all night, created the Revs first good chance in the 29th minute when he split two defenders with a well timed pass to Wells Thompson. Thompson dribbled in on goal, but his shot was well saved by a charging Danny Cepero.
Joseph nearly scored in the 74th minute, when he got on the end of a long throw in from rookie Darrius Barnes. The Revolution captain’s header, however, went wide of the far post and no one was there to tap it in.
Mansally finally tied it in the 90th minute, after Joseph sent in a well placed flick over the defense. Mansally outpaced the defense and managed to head the ball past an onrushing Cepero to tie the score at 1-1.
The Revs next head to Gillette Stadium for their home opener against FC Dallas on Saturday.
