Revs Fit to be Tied

Two Twellman Tallies Go for Naught

September 24, 2007
By Sean Donahue

Continuing a disturbing pattern on the road, the Revolution took a lead, but couldn't hold on. Twice Taylor Twellman gave the Revs the lead, but both times New York had a response as the two teams ended deadlocked in a 2-2 draw Saturday night at Giants Stadium.

The draw further dents the Revolution's hope of catching first?place D.C. United in the standings.

The third-place Red Bulls attacked early, with only a last second tackle from Michael Parkhurst preventing Francis Doe from having a chance deep in the Revolution's goal box right from the kickoff. Soon after, New York got its first shot when Dave Van Den Bergh received the ball in space from Claudio Reyna in the left side of the box. The Dutchman's shot was well saved by Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis.

Taylor Twellman scored both Revolution goals in Saturday's 2-2 draw with New York.

Twellman put the Revs on top in the 22nd minute. Steve Ralston sent a perfect curling free kick into the box that a wide open Twellman managed to send past Red Bull goalie Roy Wattereus with a powerful header.

The Revs came under huge pressure in the 36th minute after New York was allowed to continue play despite a possible offside. Dema Kovalenko, in plenty of free space, eventually got a shot off that Reis managed to deflect wide with a diving save. On the ensuing corner, Seth Stammler sent a low shot to the far post that left Reis helpless, but was cleared off the line from Parkhurst.

Thirty seconds later, the Red Bulls knotted the score on the first goal of Doe's career. Dane Richards blew past the left side of the Revolution defense and sent in a cross that Doe beat Jay Heaps to and directed into the neat with a well placed header to tie the match at 1-1.

Twellman scuffed a good opportunity in the 54th minute, after a quick counter attack sprang a 2-on-2 opportunity for the Revolution. Ralston drew the defenders and sent it over to an open Twellman, who attempted to one-time a shot, but sent it softly to Wattereus.

Doe had another opportunity in the 64th minute from about 25-yards out, creating space for himself before unleashing a hard shot to the upper corner that Reis managed to parry wide.

In the 70th minute, Twellman put the Revs in the lead for the second time with a spectacular goal. The Revs all-time leading scorer received the ball at the top of the box, slid in and sent a low shot to the far post that beat Wattereus, hit the post and went in for his 14th goal of the season.

But 15 minutes later, with just six minutes left in the match, Juan Pablo Angel tied the match back up, beating the Revs offside trap to get on the end of a flick on header from Doe. Angel ran in on goal, alone and fired passed an onrushing Reis for his 16th goal of the season.

The Revs next head back to Foxboro to face Colorado on Sept. 29.
