The pick the Revs will get for John will be in either the 2010 or 2011 MLS SuperDrafts.

DC plans to play John immediately, and he could be available this Sunday in United’s match with the Red Bulls. To make room for John, United released forward Francis Doe.

“We are pleased to be acquiring a solid veteran defender in Avery,” said United General Manager Dave Kasper. “He has been a consistent performer in our League for several years, playing in many big games. Avery will make our back line stronger and we are pleased that he is now a part of D.C. United.”

The 33-year-old John spent last season with USL club Miami FC and played 15 games after signing with the club in May. A member of the Trinidad and Tobago National Team, John spent four seasons in New England (2004-07) and started for the Revolution in both the 2006 and 2007 MLS Cups.

In 75 career appearances – including 71 starts - John recorded one goal and two assists, with his only goal coming in the 2004 playoffs.
