The New England Revolution reestablished their place at the top of the standings with a 2-1 victory against D.C. United in front of nearly 15,000 at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Revs got off to an early lead through Taylor Twellman and then added a second on an impressive strike from Jeff Larentowicz just a few minutes after halftime. D.C. took one back in the 68th minute through the creative Jaime Moreno, but the Revolution held on for their league best 11th win of the season.

"I think the first half we thoroughly deserved to be ahead," said Revs coach Steve Nicol. "I think we would have liked to have penetrated them a bit more, but I think as far as playing in the game was concerned we were in control up until probably the 60th minute and then we kind of lost our way a wee bit."

Nicol switched things up from Saturday's 4-0 loss at San Jose, switching back to a 3-5-2 formation from the 4-4-2 the team played last week. Shalrie Joseph, back from suspension, started at defensive midfielder and Larentowicz moved back into the midfield with Michael Parkhurst returning from the Olympics starting at central defense. Khano Smith also got the start at left midfield over Mauricio Castro with Twellman returning to the starting line-up up top.

The Revs took the lead in the 24th when Smith picked up the ball around 40 yards from goal and dribbled all the way to the endline before send a low cross in front of goal. Adam Cristman slid in to get the ball away from goalkeeper Louis Crayton and the ball deflected off Twellman and landed in the back of the net.

"Khano made a great run and Adam just was big and physical and made a good play," said Twellman. "Fortunately I was in the right spot at the right time."

Fred nearly equalized in the 37th minute. The Brazilian midfielder unleashed a shot from about 35 yards out that was out of reach for a diving Doug Warren, but landed just wide of the post.

Larentowicz made it 2-0 with a blast from distance in the 49th minute. The defensive midfielder made a run up field and then got the ball when Twellman, after receiving the ball with his back to goal from Steve Ralston, sent it back at the top of the box. Larentowicz unleashed a powerful shot towards the center of the net, but the ball curved at the last second, catching Crayton off guard to give the Revs a two goal lead.

Twellman should have had his second goal of the night in the 63rd minute, after Cristman played him through on goal. The Revs all-time leading scorer had his angle cut down by a charging Crayton, but went for power over placement and saw his shot blocked.

D.C. pulled one back in the 69th minute when Jaime Moreno played Fred in on goal. Jay Heaps got back and slid in to block the shot, but it fell right to Moreno. Moreno, who saw Warren out of position after trying to stop Fred's shot, chipped it over the Revolution 'keeper and into the back of the net.

"Fred ended up getting behind our defense and I stepped up to block the shot," said Warren. "I think Jay slid and blocked it. He did a great job to block the shot. It just fell to Moreno and his class [showed]. He really turned it on in the last twenty-five minutes and you saw him take over the game. It was just a classy finish."

"They put us under pressure,” said Nicol. “We've lost a goal from our own bad play. We should have just stopped the ball up the other end of the field and cleared it and we didn't. We tried to be too clever in the wrong area and we lost the ball and Jaime Moreno scored a great goal. If that falls to anyone else it's not a goal. It's a fantastic goal from him and then it's difficult after that. All of sudden there is one goal in it and you are kind of stuck between going forward too early and sitting back too far and that is kind of what happened after they scored."

Warren came up big in the 74th minute, after Moreno, near midfield, found a wide open Santino Quaranta near the Revolution box. Quaranta took a step forward before sending in a low shot, but Warren was well positioned and made the save.

"He just kind of snuck [in] on the back post," said Warren. "[Moreno] played the ball over the top, but Albright was breathing down his neck, so it made it hard for him to get a good shot on goal. I just held my ground and it actually came right at me."

In the 86th minute Cristman nearly gave the Revs back their two goal lead. Cristman redirected a Ralston free kick on frame and his shot beat Crayton, but was cleared off the line from a D.C. defender.
