Columbus had the first chance in the 7th minute after Robbie Rogers got free down the left flank by beating Sainey Nyassi and sent a cross towards the penalty spot. Guillermo Barros Schelotto headed the ball forward and Steven Lenhart connected on a bicycle kick. Lenhart's shot was well placed, but goalkeeper Matt Reis managed to tip it over the bar.
The Revs dodged a bullet in the 13th minute after Barros Schelotto took a free kick from nearly 30 yards out. The Argentinean midfielder powered a shot on frame, but Reis got a hand to it. The shot hit the crossbar and came back out where Brad Evans directed a header towards goal. His shot was denied by the crossbar.
Twellman had a chance in the 18th minute, when Mauricio Castro played the ball to the top of the box. The Revs all-time goal scorer turned his defender and put a curling shot on goal. Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer was well positioned to make the save.
Columbus opened the scoring in the 40th minute when Rogers broke down the left flank and sent in a cross. The ball split the Revolution defense and fell to Schelotto, who hammered it past Reis to make it 1-0.
Two minutes later the Crew threatened again when Rogers got free for a header off a Schelotto cross and headed a shot on frame. Reis tipped it wide for a corner and on the ensuing corner kick, Shalrie Joseph was forced to clear it off the line.
In first half stoppage time the Crew made it 2-0 when Andy Iro got free of the defense headed home a Schelotto corner kick.
The Crew put the game out of reach in the 68th minute when Schelotto played substitute Jason Garey free of the defense with a perfectly weighted pass. Garey dribbled into the box and sent a low shot past Reis to make it 3-0.
Garey added to the embarrassment in the 90th minute, when he was played through on goal with a through pass from former Rev Pat Noonan. Alone in on goal, Garey again slotted it past Reis to hand the Revs their second 4-0 loss in a row.
