Sunday’s game against the New Jersey Wildcats was a rematch of last weekend’s thrilling encounter that finished 3-2 to the Renegades. Boston did it again Sunday, topping the Wildcats, 2-0.
The Renegades were boosted by the inclusion of Siera Strawser, who made her first W-League appearance for the team this season. Strawser made an immediate impact with an excellent shot in the early stages of the game, producing a good save from the Wildcats keeper.
The Renegades had keeper Lauren Peak to thank for keeping New Jersey off the board as she produced a magnificent save from a penalty kick in the 16th minute.
The Renegades were not to be denied, however, and Tori Huster opened the scoring with an assist from Katie Vogel in the 28th minute.
The visitors effectively ended the match in the 73rd minute when Kay Harbrueger found Marisa Kazbour to double the Renegades’ advantage at 2-0.
“It was fantastic to bounce back with a victory over the Wildcats after disappointment the previous evening,” said Renegades head coach Darren Gallagher. “We scored two fantastic goals this evening and hopefully the performance can catapult us toward bigger and better things.”
The MPS Renegades’ next home game is part of a doubleheader with the Boston Breakers of WPS at Harvard Stadium on Sunday. The Long Island Lady Rough Riders provide the opposition in a 2:30 p.m. kickoff, with the Breakers taking on Saint Louis Athletica at 6 p.m.
Hudson Valley 2, Renegades 1
The Renegades began their weekend road trip with a matchup against the current first place team in the New England Division of the W-League Eastern Conference. The Renegades fell, 2-1, in front of over 2,000 spectators at Newburgh Free Academy.
The Renegades took the lead inside the first two minutes when a pass by Corie Halasz found Vogel to open the scoring for the visitors. The lead was short-lived, however, as Hudson Valley responded just five minutes later with a goal from Whitney Palmer to tie the contest.
In the second half, the visitors nearly took the lead when great interplay between Melanie Booth and Huster saw the ball travel just wide of the left post.
The score remained level until the 79th minute when the home side countered from a free kick, resulting in Angelika Johansson heading the ball into the net for the game-winner.
