Renegades Grab Points on the Road
Boston Goes 1-0-1 Over Weekend
May 20, 2009
The MPS Renegades took to the road this weekend with back to back W-League games at Long Island and New York.
In Saturday’s action, the Renegades played to a 0-0 tie with the Long Island Lady Rough Riders.
The game started at a high tempo despite the tricky conditions caused by fog and mist. The opening period saw Renegades forward Katie Vogel proving to be a real handful for the Long Island defense. Despite several half chances, the Renegades were unable to make the breakthrough and the score remained 0-0 at the half.
The second half started much like the first with the Renegades dictating the speed of the game. Renegades forward Corie Halasz created several opportunities from the wide area, but the visitors were unable to capitalize and the match fizzled out and finished scoreless.
“We were unlucky not to take all three points away with us today,” said Renegades Head Coach Darren Gallagher. “I was pleased with the level of possession and the chances we created, but we needed to be more clinical in the final third of the field.”
The Renegades entered Sunday’s contest in search of their first win of the season at New York Magic. In a game where the Renegades found an offensive spark, goals through Corie Halasz, Alissa Oldenkamp and Brooke Knowlton earned Darren Gallagher’s side an emphatic 3-0 victory.
The Renegades opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a perfectly measured set play. An inswinging corner found its way to midfielder Halasz who put it home to give her side a 1-0 lead.
Shortly afterwards, Tori Huster saw her shot from 25 yards tipped over the bar by the New York keeper. The Renegades had gathered their momentum and it was Huster again causing problems for the hosts as she crashed an effort against the bar from six yards out.
In the 68th minute, Alissa Oldenkamp was set free inside the penalty area, and sent a fantastic lob over the outstretched hands of the NY keeper to double the Renegades advantage. The game was settled just two minutes later when Tori Huster found Brooke Knowlton who put Boston up 3-0.
“We can take a lot of positives from the 3-0 win at NY,” said Gallagher. “Collecting a total of four points on the road is fantastic as it sets us up for some difficult games ahead.”
The Renegades next home game is at Framingham State College against New Jersey Wildcats on Saturday May 30 at 6 p.m.
