Reid Earns 300th Victory

UConn Coach Gets Mark in 3-0 Win

September 29, 2007

STORRS, Conn. – Ryan Cordeiro and the UConn men’s soccer team made sure coach Ray Reid got his 300th victory Friday night. Cordeiro scored twice and Akeem Priestley added another to lead the No. 5 Huskies over St. John’s, 3-0, in front of 5,116 fans eager to see history made by their heralded coach.

Reid looked to be in good shape to reach the milestone win early on when Cordeiro sent a flying header into the lower right corner to put UConn on top, 1-0 in the 33rd minute. Oscar Castillo played the ball over to Mike Pezza, who served it from just outside the penalty area to just above the goal box for Cordeiro to finish.

Coming out of the intermission with a 1-0 lead, the Huskies wasted no time pressing forward for the second goal. O'Brian White sent a shot wide left and Kwame Watson-Siriboe had a chance, but it was Priestley who scored in the 52nd minute to stretch the lead to 2-0.

The junior midfielder got a shot off from about 15 yards out that hit the left post and then deflected along the goal line, eventually crossing into the ride side of the net for his third goal of the season.

Cordeiro sealed the deal 14 minutes later when he played the ball off his chest before dribbling a few steps and sending a shot through the Red Storm goalkeeper's outstretched arms and into the right side of the goal mouth.

UConn improved to 8-1-0 on the season and 3-1-0 in the BIG EAST. With the loss, St. John's fell to 4-4-1 on the season and 2-1-0 in the conference.

The three-goal spread accounts for the largest margin of victory between the two teams since Sept. 26, 1999, when UConn shutout the Johnnies, 3-0, in Storrs.
