Reds Remain Undefeated

Down Aztecs, 5-0

June 7, 2008

The SoccerPlus CT Reds remained undefeated this year, improving to 5-0 after a 5-0 win over the Boston Aztecs (1-2) Friday.

The Reds dominated the first half of play, outshooting Boston, 7-0, and creating chances in the final third of the field. Maggie Tomecka struck in the third minute of play with assists from captain Kristen Graczyk and Becky Ryan to put the Reds up 1-0. With a low cross from Becky Ryan, Tomecka was able to beat the defender and place the ball in the low right hand corner.

The Reds continued their lead with a goal from Katie Schoepfer in the ninth minute. Ryan played the ball out of the midfield to Tomecka, who was able to slot the ball through the defenders to Schoepfer. Tomecka then netted the third goal of the game off a cross from Katie Schoepfer.

The Aztecs lone scoring chance was created in the second half with a long run from Natalie Crutchfield. In the 79th minute, the Aztecs had a chance with Reds goalkeeper, Jill Mastroianni, out of play. However, Graczyk stepped up to block the shot from Aztec forward Kerry Connors.

Schoepfer answered with a goal in the same minute with an assist from Tiffany Weimer. Weimer then made her own mark in the 84th minute with a chip over Aztec keeper Jamie Gillis from 14 yards out.

“We played our best soccer of the season tonight. We played well defensively, which created good scoring chances,” said head coach Tony DiCicco. “The Aztecs are a very fast team, but our defense was able to keep up with them. One of our biggest assets is our depth. We can use any player and be successful.”

Tomecka, who finished with two goals and an assist, played well in the box, creating scoring chances.

“We played really well tonight,” remarks Tomecka, who also graduated from Ross University Medical School today. “We just need to keep improving. Our goal right now is to win the league.”

The Reds travel to Agawam to face the New England Mutiny June 13 at 7:00 p.m.
