The New England Mutiny’s Mary-Frances Monroe and SoccerPlus CT's Maggie Tomecka shared Player of the Week honors this week in advance of their team's looming showdown this Friday in Agawam, Mass.
Monroe, a former Boston Breaker secured the win for the undefeated Mutiny with a textbook goal - dribbling through various defenders - against the Boston Aztecs. The four-time NSCAA All-American & Mutiny captain has been huge for New England this season, leading the league in goals scored (6), so her collective effort gives her the right to Co-POTW honors.
Tomecka notched two goals and an assist to earn the right to share the honor with Monroe. Tomecka’s teammate, midfielder Tiffany Weimer, earned a spot on the Team of the Week. The 2007 East Player of the Year has begun to take her game to the next level, as from her midfield position, she netted a goal and two assists to keep the Reds undefeated going into Friday’s tilt with the Mutiny.
Continuing with the Red-Muriny theme, New England goalkeeper Lauren Luckey earned the nod as the ‘keeper of the Team of the Week. With the loss of 2007 East Goalkeeper of the Year Stephanie Labbe to Canadian National Team duty, Luckey has had to be more than that this season for the Mutiny and has registered three shutouts. The UMass-Amherst keeper made a game-saving stop in their shutout win at Boston to help New England stay undefeated going into their match-up against SoccerPlus CT.
