New Hampshire Takes Down Rhode Island in New England Battle

July 2, 2009

In a battle of New England Premier Development League teams, the New Hampshire Phantoms downed the Rhode Island Stingrays, 3-1, on Wednesday night.

Chris Banks put the Phantoms ahead in the 11th minute when he received a cross from Nic Todesca and buried it for the 1-0 lead. But Rhode Island tied the game in the 37th minute on a penalty kick by Matt Marcin.

Early in the second half, the Stingrays applied pressure on the Phantoms defense, which held strong. After several substitutions, the Phantoms came alive and eventually scored their second and third goals, both by Salem, N.H. native Danny Hernandez on two great individual efforts in the 85th and 89th minutes.

New Hampshire (2-8-2) will be on the road for their next two games on July 11 at Ocean City Barons and a return match at Rhode Island Stingrays on July 15.
