October 12, 2007

AMHERST, Mass. -- Amanda Thomas picked a good time to score her first goal of the season. The University of Rhode Island defender potted the game-winning goal in the 98th minute to give the URI women’s soccer team a 3-2 overtime win over UMass-Amherst Thursday.

The sophomore found the back of the net in the lower left corner, off a Dora Larusdottir corner kick in the 98th minute.

The golden goal capped off a late comeback for the Rams. Trailing 2-1, Larusdottir scored her seventh goal of the season at the 71:23 mark on a hard, high shot which beat UMass goalkeeper Krisin Walker. The goal was set up off a pass from Thorunn Jonsdottir.

Rhode Island got on the scoreboard first, as Deb Nelson tallied her team-best eighth goal of the season at the 35:06 mark. Nelson took the Kaylen Shimoda pass up, and found the back of the net over UMass' Walker.

Massachusetts would counter with two unanswered goals in the span of 1:18, to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. Christina Adams put home her own rebound in the 44th minute and Vanessa Patry beat URI goalkeeper Jackie Fede low in the 45th minute.

URI outshot UMass, 22-15, and attempted five corner kicks to the Minutewomen's three.

With the win, Rhode Island improved to 8-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in Atlantic 10 play while UMass fell to 7-3-1 (2-3-0).
