Quinnipiac women roll over FDU
Velaj, McLoughlin score 2 goals apiece in 4-1 win
October 25, 2008
The Quinnipiac University women’s soccer team defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-1, Friday afternoon.
Furtuna Velaj (Stamford, Conn.) and Meagan McLoughlin (Rocky Hill, Conn.) each scored two goals for the Bobcats in the team’s second conference win of the season. Quinnipiac improves to 2-3-1 in Northeast Conference play and 6-5-2 overall. With the loss the Knights dropped to 3-3 in the NEC and 6-9-0 overall.
Quinnipiac opened the scoring when Velaj beat a defender in the left corner and crossed the ball to McLoughlin standing alone in front of the net. Fairleigh Dickinson keeper Megan MacKellar moved out to challenge McLoughlin, but the sophomore forward snuck the ball past for her second of the season. The assist was the first of the season for Velaj.
The Knights tied the score in the 22nd minute. Lisa-Marie Curti headed a ball past Quinnipiac keeper Jillian Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.) from the side of the net for the tying goal.
Velaj gave the Bobcats a 2-1 lead in the 28th on her 13th goal of the season. The freshman forward put a move on two defenders to the left of the net and dribbled into the 18-yard box. She fired a shot into the top far corner from a low angle.
The Bobcats took a two-goal advantage, 3-1, in the 53rd minute as Velaj scored her second of the game. Velaj collected the ball and broke down the left sideline. She dribbled around a defender and flicked the ball over Fairleigh Dickinson goalkeeper Stephanie Tanzi just outside of the six-yard box.
McLoughlin added her second of the game to give the Bobcats a 4-1 lead in the 61st minute. Kyla Miles (Newtown, Conn.) picked up the ball after a throw-in and put in a cross to the far post. McLoughlin headed the ball to the left of a diving Tanzi.
Kelley kept the score 4-1 with just over nine minutes remaining as she stopped Lora Lehr. The Fairleigh Dickinson midfielder broke in alone on goal before blasting a shot from the middle of the box that Kelley steered aside. The Quinnipiac keeper stopped two shots, while MacKellar and Tanzi combined to stop eight Bobcat shots.
The Bobcats return to action Sunday when they host Sacred Heart at the Quinnipiac Soccer Field at noon.
