Quinnipiac Third in NEC Poll
Three Other New England Schools in League
August 25, 2009
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men’s soccer team was the highest ranked New England team in the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Bobcats were picked to finish third in the poll, followed by Central Connecticut and Sacred Heart in the sixth and seventh spots with Bryant rounding out the vote at 11th.
The four-time defending regular season champion Monmouth Hawks were picked first in the preseason poll with five first-place votes
Quinnipiac returns 22 players from last season’s team which finished third in conference play with a 5-2-2 mark and 10-5-4 overall, qualifying for the NEC Tournament for the first time since the 2004 season.
“It’s always flattering to know how you’re viewed by your peers,” said Bobcats’ coach Eric Da Costa. “Our goal as a program is always to be mentioned amongst the best. What’s important to us, however, is not where people perceive us to be now, but, rather, where we stand at the end. We have a fantastic group of players in place who are all focused on the challenges and journey that are ahead. I look forward to watching us continue to grow as a team and program.”
After missing the playoffs a year ago, Central Connecticut looks to lead the Blue Devils back to the conference tournament for the first time since winning the NEC Championship in 2007.
