Bobcats Fall for Fairleigh Dickinson, 2-0

November 15, 2008

LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Quinnipiac University men’s soccer team fell to Fairleigh Dickinson University, 2-0, Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the Northeast Conference Tournament.

The third-seeded Bobcats finish the season with a 10-5-4 mark. The Knights move on to play Mount St. Mary’s in Sunday’s Championship Game after defeating top-seeded Monmouth University, 3-2 on penalty kicks, in the day’s first semifinal game.

Fairleigh Dickinson took a 1-0 lead into halftime on a goal from Samson Malijani in the 14th minute. Serge Zulu made a quick pass to Maljani in the middle of the box. He turned and fired a shot into the upper right corner for the game’s first goal. The goal was the first allowed by Quinnipiac goalkeeper Freddy Hall in 369:06 of play.

The Knights scored again in the 80th to take a two-goal advantage on the Bobcats. Zuli beat Quinnipiac’s Hall off a free kick from Fernando Huthmacher to the right of the goal.

The NEC’s Player of the Year Graciano Brito was held without a goal for the second time this season against Fairleigh Dickinson. Brito finishes his career at Quinnipiac with 40 goals and 92 points, both those figures are Quinnipiac Division I records.

Hall stopped seven shots in the game, while Fairleigh Dickinson’s Majdi Zaineh recorded six saves in the win.

“These moments are never easy,” said Quinnipiac coach Eric Da Costa. “We wanted more out of today and played well enough to win, but Fairleigh Dickinson is a good team and very deserving of playing in the final. This will sting for a while, but once the dust settles we will be able to look back on this season and appreciate all the reasons it was a success.”
