Quincy's Murphy Let Go By Clavijo
Will Remain With Rapids in Front Office Position
June 24, 2008
By Nick Williams
Quincy native John Murphy was removed of his duties as one of coach Fernando Clavijos assistants with the Colorado Rapids last week.
Clavijo, who worked together with Murphy when the former was the head coach of the Revolution, said the decision was his own and based on Murphys time away from the team.
Murphy had missed time while traveling to Europe to complete classes to get his UEFA pro badge. He will remain with the Rapids as director of player development.
"He was missing 10 days here, five days there," Clavijo told Soccer America. "I knew what his schedule was going to be but he definitely did a couple of things I did not like. It was my decision. He obviously has his mind on doing other things and that's fine, but I need people who can work with me on what we are trying to accomplish here."
Clavijo coached the Revs from 2000 until his firing in 2002. It was during that time when he first hired Murphy. Clavijo later brought Murphy with him when he was hired to head the Rapids prior to the 2005 season.
